A MATTER OF SPACE | URUGUAY

Biasi, De Marchi, Lescher, Papaleo, Vázquez

5 January - 30 April, 2019

A MATTER OF SPACE is an exhibition that presents five contemporary artists focusing on unconventional representations of space and use of material. In their artistic research, study and experimentation on materials are the key to new possibilities to understand the space we live in.

Alberto Biasi, born in 1937 (Padua), was one of the co-founders of the Gruppo N. After the dissolution of the group he discovers his solo career: he initially investigates transitional spaces and shapes. Then he creates a set of works combining of carved lamellar elements incorporated into painted surfaces: through these constructions he produces changing visual effects and establishes an evocative exchange between the observer and the object. In the last phase Biasi elaborates a previous research and creates the "assemblages", mainly monochrome diptychs and triptychs, with impressive plastic and colourist effects.

The artistic research of Riccardo De Marchi, born in 1964 in Northern Italy, is aimed to create a new spatial universe through his universal code. Indeed, he investigates the qualities of aluminium, stainless steel and plexiglass through tension created by the absence or presence of the material. The traces of artist’s actions became the “letters” _of this new code.

Arthur Lescher, Brazilian artist born in 1962, is known for his unique way to explore space. Through the use of a wide range of materials, his works inhabit and transform the space creating new levels and analysing the behaviours of materials and the relationship between full and empty spaces.

Daniel Papaleo explores the representation of space and human mind through his sculptures. His basic idea is to describe the lines of our mental perimeters and see how we build our lives within these lines. The result is a metaphor of the precarious human being installed in the world, but he gives the observer the chance to re-think his living environment.

Verónica Vázquez, Uruguayan artist born in 1970, often works with discarded industrial material to create his artworks: she gives new life to these materials -metal, leather, plastic- combining them in poetical assemblages. Thus, she saves them from the process of degradation and disappearance, giving them a new status and creating a new code to read reality.
