Athar –meaning Impact in Arabic– creates an immersive space where many forces are at play between the material, space, time, and perception.

Piero Atchugarry Gallery, Garzón, Uruguay, is glad to announce the solo show of the Brazilian artist Tulio Pinto opening on January 13, 2018.

Born in 1974 in Brasilia, Brazil, the artist currently lives and works in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He graduated from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul – UFRGS in 2009 with  degree in visual arts and a specialization in sculpture. He is also the co-founder and a member of the Atelier Subterranea.

Pinto’s artistic practice revolves around the notions of balance, strengths, ephemerality, gravity and transformation. He uses construction and industrial materials such as metal, concrete, rubber and glass, which he combines in astonishing manners to bring a dialogue between the material, the space it inhabits and the viewer. The artist is often inspired by objects familiar to him, which could be anything, for example a bright orange balloon or a chair. He uses them as starting point to create a new experiences and questionings by placing the objects in unexpected perspectives. When confronting these works, the viewer is forced to reflect on ordinary and everyday matters from a new stance.

The artist has developed a site specific installation for Athar –meaning Impact in Arabic-, which turns the gallery into a new immersive space where different contrast of forces are at play between the material, space, time and the viewer inner perception. Starting with the unique architecture of the building –a former stable- Pinto decides to play with the looseboxes and the perceptions one can have of them. The exhibition brings notions of transformation, possibilities, but also of impact and danger into action. The tensions between the different material temperaments, their limits, but also the possibility of their impact unto the viewer brings a new sense of perspectives that reflects all of Pinto artistic research up until today.
